Level 6 Water

In Australia, about 35-50% of all domestic water is used outdoors.

Gardens play an important role in our outdoor lifestyle in Australia. The challenge for all of us is to maintain the lifestyle and environment that we have, while limiting pressure on our water resources.

With Level 6 water restrictions here, Rochedale Turf together with Vegetation Nutritional Services recognise that it is time to take action.

The effect on future generations is in our hands. Water restrictions and water saving management programs are fast becoming the norm throughout the world. In Australia, especially in Queensland, it is no different.

So what can you do?

Rochedale Turf recommends the following:

  • When designing a new garden, use drought tolerant grasses and plants which provide valuable shade and can survive in our subtropical climate (even during dry periods)
  • Care for your lawn by applying compost or organic fertilisers, watering less often but deeply and aerating the lawn for more efficient watering
  • Add a commercial strength organic wetting agent such as Stamina G to keep water and nutrients in the soil
  • Try to water as late or as early as possible (within restriction times) to reduce evaporation
  • When cutting your lawn, raise the lawn mower blade to at least three inches. A lawn cut higher encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the root system and holds soil moisture
  • Mulch your garden - mulch keeps up to 70% more water in the soil
